Join us for the day and learn how to make a traditional lampshade. Using the fabric of your choice you will learn how to make a 'soft' shade on a bowed empire frame - a classic traditional style of lampshade.
During the day the lovely Jane will teach you how to prepare your frame, binding it with straight frame tape. How to stretch, attach and hand sew your fabric onto the frame, and how to add trims and binding for a lovely finish to your lampshade.
Jane will also demonstrate how to add soft 'balloon linings' and different types of trims and embellishments to your lampshade. You will leave the course with your lampshade, and handouts so that you can go on to make many shades of your choice. Some degree of finishing at home may be required depending on your hand stitching speed.
About your Teacher:
Jane Warren is one talented lady, and an excellent tutor. She has many years of making lampshades under her belt. When not teaching, she is sourcing vintage shades and stands from around the world to revamp and then sell in her online shop The Lampshade Loft.
Maximum class size of 6.
Ideal for complete beginner, or for those wanting to try something new.
Materials:You will need half a metre of full width fabric, or larger if you wish to choose a certain pattern on your fabric. 1 metre of trim for the base - pompom, tassel, braid or anything stretchy. Plus about £10 budget for the frame and tape (paid directly to the tutor on the day).
Your chosen fabric should be relatively robust - not too thin as you will be heavily stretching it, plus if it is too thin the light bulb will be seen through the shade. Try and aim for a cotton or cotton mix for the first shade, not a fabric with a loose weave or one that is embellished. Your lampshade with be made using your fabric cut on the bias, so bear this in mind when choosing your fabric (i.e. if your fabric has a pattern, it will be placed at a 45 degree angle).
A one day session.
Workshops are held in our colourful and cosy studio, above the shop. There is lots of space to spread out and a separate chill out area to have a break. The shop is located in central Chichester, about a 10 minute walk from the train and bus station. The closest car park is The Cattle Market.
