The Painter's Shirt by Faith-Rowan Leeves is a wonderfully relaxed, oversized shirt with a romantic, vintage-inspired feel. With its dropped shoulders, softly gathered cuffs and distinctive frilled hem, it's a lovely statement piece that can be dressed up or down depending on your choice of fabric.
The design features a button-through front, a gently curved neckline finished with binding and long ties, and a playful gathered frill around the hem. The generous sleeves are finished with elasticated cuffs, creating a soft, blouson shape that's both comfortable and easy to wear.
Choose a lightweight cotton or linen for a breezy, everyday blouse, or experiment with a warmer fabric for a cosy shirt to wear through the cooler months. The Painter's Shirt is a lovely opportunity to play with colour, texture and print, and its relaxed silhouette makes it particularly easy to style with trousers, jeans or skirts.
This was Faith's very first sewing pattern, developed from one of her bestselling slow fashion designs. The instructions introduce her distinctive Making Method, which focuses on practical sewing techniques and an efficient approach to garment construction.
Suggested Fabrics:
Lightweight to medium-weight non-stretch woven fabrics such as cotton lawn, poplin, linen, cotton gauze, chambray and soft flannel. Choose a fabric with a little drape for a softer silhouette, or a crisp cotton for more structure and volume.
Fabric Requirements:
Fabric quantities are given in metres and are based on cutting the fabric flat, without nap.

These are minimum fabric requirements and do not allow for shrinkage, pattern matching or directional prints. We recommend purchasing a little extra fabric where necessary.
You will need:
- 7 buttons
- 5 mm wide elastic - two lengths of 18 cm for Size 1 or two lengths of 20 cm for Size 2
- Matching or contrasting sewing thread
- A small amount of interfacing if using lightweight fabric

Choosing Your Size:
Size 1 is recommended for approximately UK sizes 6–14, while Size 2 is recommended for UK sizes 14–22. As this is an intentionally oversized design, check the finished bust measurement to make sure you're happy with the amount of ease.
If you're between sizes, consider how relaxed you would like the finished shirt to be before choosing your size.
