Gathered lampshades are everywhere, so come and learn how to make one yourself. Join us for a one-day workshop where you will learn how to make a gathered lampshade.
What you'll learn:
- Attaching and hand sewing gathered fabric onto a lampshade frame
- Hand sewing a lining into place
- Finishing the lampshade with a handmade bias trim for both the top and base
In addition, there will be demonstrations on:
- How to bind a lampshade frame
- Two methods of gathering fabric
- How to calculate the materials needed
- Making your own handmade trims
Is this class for you? This course is suitable for beginners, although it helps to love hand sewing - there is a lot involved!
Materials: To make the most of the day, the outer fabric and lining will already be chosen by Jane and prepared for you to sew. You will learn all the skills needed to go on and
make many more of different sizes in your choice of fabric at home. The course has been devised so that you learn the method (hence we don’t invite you to bring your own choice of fabric). You are welcome to video all the steps needed throughout the day, and you will leave with a full set of printed instructions for future use.
Please bring a packed lunch and £20 cash for the tutor to cover all materials including a lampshade frame, fabrics x 2 and trim.
About your Teacher: The workshop is taught by Jane Warren, who runs The Lampshade Loft and has over 12 years’ experience teaching lampshade making in a variety of styles. Her book The Complete Guide to Making Lampshades (published in 2024) is available to buy from Clothkits, both in store and online.
Class Duration: Full day
Venue: Clothkits, 16 The Hornet, Chichester PO19 7JG. The workshop is held in our modern and vibrant studio on the ground floor behind our shop. We are located in central Chichester, about a 10 minute walk from the train and bus station. The closest car park is The Cattle Market.

If you change your mind about an item or have received the incorrect item then we offer a very straightforward return policy. You may return unwanted goods up to 28 days after purchase for exchange, a store credit, or a refund.
