The Gertrude Gilet is a relaxed, cardigan-style layer that's just the ticket for those in-between days when you want a little extra warmth without a full jacket. With its easy sleeveless shape, gently curved hem and simple button front, it's a wonderfully useful piece to throw over a T-shirt, blouse or sweatshirt.
Two little patch pockets add a practical finishing touch, while the neat bound edges give Gertrude its distinctive look. Make it unlined for a simple everyday layer, or add the optional lining for a little extra warmth and a beautifully finished inside.
There is plenty of scope to play with fabric too. Try a cuddly bouclé, teddy fleece or textured knit for a cosy version, or choose a medium-weight woven fabric for a smarter take on the style.
Sizing: UK 8–24.
Suggested Fabrics: Medium-weight stretch bouclé, double jersey, cable knit, sweatshirt fabric or reversible woven fabrics. Teddy fleece and other cosy textured fabrics also work beautifully.
If using a woven fabric, a medium to heavier weight works best and a double-sided fabric is particularly useful for an unlined version. Bought bias binding can be used for woven fabrics, while stretch fabrics are best finished with self-made binding cut across the width of the fabric.

If using bought bias binding, you will need approximately 25cm less fabric. The optional lining also requires approximately 25cm less fabric than the main fabric requirement.
You will also need:
- 4 x 20–25mm buttons
- 6m of 25mm bias binding, or self-made binding
- Matching thread
Ability: Easy – previous experience attaching binding is useful, but if it's new to you, practising on a scrap of fabric first will help you get a neat finish.

Returns
If you change your mind about an item or have received the incorrect item then we offer a very straightforward return policy. You may return unwanted goods up to 28 days after purchase for exchange, a store credit, or a refund.
Returned merchandise must be in the condition sold with original packaging and any tags intact. Goods must be unused, unopened, in perfect condition and remain in a re-saleable condition. Non-returnable items include kits once they have been cut, cut lengths of fabric, ribbons or trim, samples, sale items, and ex-demonstration items.
