The Mitchell Trousers from Closet Core Patterns are a modern interpretation of classic pleated trousers, combining elegant tailoring with a relaxed, comfortable fit. Inspired by the timeless style of singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell, this versatile pattern features a flattering high waist, beautifully shaped pleats and clever details that make these trousers a pleasure to wear.
The high-waisted design features a fly front zip and a concealed waistband facing, creating a smooth, uninterrupted silhouette through the waist and hips. Deep front pleats cleverly incorporate distinctive angled pockets, while darts at the back provide shaping. Choose a discreet hook and bar fastening or a traditional button closure, and add optional back welt pockets for an extra tailored finish.
Two versions to make:
- View A – Tapered Leg: A contemporary trouser with a gently tapered leg finishing at the ankle. Smart enough for work but equally lovely dressed down with trainers.
- View B – Wide Leg: A full-length, wide-leg trouser with adjustable waist straps secured with D-rings or slider buckles, adding a distinctive tailoring detail.
Choose cotton twill, denim or linen for a more structured silhouette, or try Tencel twill, wool crepe or silk noil for a softer, flowing finish. With two very different leg shapes, Mitchell is a wonderfully adaptable pattern for building a handmade wardrobe.

Suggested Fabrics
Light to medium-weight woven fabrics with some structure, such as denim, cotton twill, canvas, linen and wool suiting. For a softer silhouette with more drape, choose Tencel twill, wool crepe or silk noil.

- Fusible interfacing: 0.45m if 150cm wide, or 0.9m if 50cm wide
- Pocket lining: 0.7m of 114cm or 150cm wide fabric
- Trouser zip – see lengths below
- 13mm sew-in hook and bar closure or 16mm button for the fly fastening
- 16mm button for the inside waistband
- Matching sewing thread

Choosing Your Size: For trousers, start with your waist and hip measurements. The 0–20 and 14–32 ranges have different proportions, so compare both charts if your measurements fall within the overlapping sizes. Both ranges are drafted for an approximate height of 168cm.
