The Romero Trousers sewing pattern from Pauline Alice takes its inspiration from classic sailor trousers, with a flattering high waist, wide legs and distinctive button fastenings at the sides. Combining vintage nautical styling with a contemporary silhouette, Romero is a versatile pattern with two lengths to choose from.
Fitted neatly through the waist and hips before widening into a relaxed leg, Romero features two rows of buttons at the front, creating the characteristic sailor trouser look. Cleverly concealed pockets are incorporated into the side openings, keeping the silhouette clean and practical without interrupting the design.
Two versions to make:
- View A – Cropped Trousers: High-waisted, wide-leg trousers finishing at the ankle. A lovely alternative to classic tailored trousers, particularly effective in cotton twill, denim or linen.
- View B – Shorts: A shorter version with the same flattering high waist, sailor-style button fastening and concealed pockets. Perfect for warmer weather in cotton canvas or lightweight denim.
Choose a medium-weight woven fabric with enough structure to emphasise the wide-leg shape and button details. Cotton canvas, linen, gabardine, twill and denim are all excellent choices, while corduroy or wool suiting will create a lovely version for cooler weather. Contrast buttons can make a feature of the nautical styling, or choose matching buttons for a more understated finish.

- Main fabric: 1.75m of 150cm wide fabric, or 2.2m of 110cm wide fabric
- Pocket lining: 0.3m of 110cm or 150cm wide fabric
- Fusible interfacing: 0.35m of 110cm or 150cm wide interfacing
View B – Shorts
- Main fabric: 0.85m of 150cm wide fabric, or 1.25m of 110cm wide fabric
- Pocket lining: 0.3m of 110cm or 150cm wide fabric
- Fusible interfacing: 0.35m of 110cm or 150cm wide interfacing
Suggested Fabrics
Medium-weight woven fabrics with some structure, such as cotton canvas, linen, gabardine, cotton twill, denim, wool suiting or corduroy. Choose a fabric that will hold the shape of the wide legs while remaining comfortable to wear.
