The Hanbok Shirt & Coat from Sewing Therapy is a beautifully simple, versatile layering piece inspired by the traditional Korean hanbok. With its distinctive wrap-front design, relaxed sleeves and elegant tie fastening, this contemporary interpretation combines traditional influences with an easy, wearable silhouette.
Designed with both an inner and outer tie fastening, the Hanbok Shirt & Coat wraps comfortably around the body, creating a clean, softly structured shape. The generous sleeves provide plenty of room for movement and layering, while bias-bound edges give the garment a neat, considered finish. With no complicated fastenings to master, it's a wonderfully satisfying project for confident beginners.
Two lengths to make:
- Cropped Length: A shorter, boxy silhouette that works beautifully as a lightweight shirt or little jacket. Lovely worn over dresses, skirts or high-waisted trousers.
- Hip Length: A longer version with a relaxed, easy-fitting shape, ideal for creating a lightweight coat or jacket to layer over everyday outfits.
Fabric choice can completely transform this design. Make it in crisp cotton, cotton lawn or linen for a lightweight shirt, or choose wool, canvas, quilted cotton or a textured jacquard for a more substantial jacket. The simple lines are particularly effective in beautiful fabrics, making this a lovely pattern for experimenting with colour, texture and print.

Suggested Fabrics
Light to medium-weight woven fabrics such as cotton lawn, cotton poplin, linen, Tencel, silk blends and lightweight jacquard for a softer shirt or layering piece. For a more structured jacket or coat, choose heavier linen blends, wool, cotton canvas, quilted cotton, brocade or substantial jacquard fabrics. Consider the weight and drape of your chosen fabric, particularly if you plan to wear the garment over other layers.
