    The Low Bib Pinafore from Sewing Therapy is a lovely contemporary take on the classic pinafore dress, with a distinctive low bib, slender shoulder straps and a softly gathered skirt. Easy to wear and wonderfully versatile, it's a relaxed style that works beautifully layered over everything from a simple T-shirt to a pretty blouse or lightweight knit.

    The cropped front bib sits just below the bust, creating a flattering high-waisted shape, while the full skirt falls in gentle gathers for plenty of movement. An elasticated back waistband makes the pinafore comfortable to slip on and wear throughout the day, with the option to add fixed shoulder straps for a clean, simple finish or adjustable ties at the back for a softer, more playful look.

    There are plenty of possibilities when it comes to fabric, too. Make it in washed linen for an easy everyday dress, cotton or denim for a little more structure, or a soft double gauze for a relaxed summer feel. It's the sort of pattern that can look completely different depending on your fabric choice, making it a lovely one to sew more than once.

    Suggested Fabrics

    Choose lightweight to medium-weight woven fabrics that are comfortable to wear and easy to handle. Washed linen, cotton poplin, cotton lawn, medium-weight cotton, lightweight denim and double gauze are all lovely choices. For a softer, more fluid silhouette, try a suitable viscose or Tencel blend.

    Avoid very stretchy fabrics or those that are particularly slippery, as these may make constructing the narrow straps more challenging.

    Fabric quantities are based on 140cm wide fabric and include the necessary pieces for the lining and pockets.

    Important: If using fabric measuring 100–106cm wide, the skirt panels will need to be joined to achieve the full width. For fewer seams, the designer recommends fabric at least 127cm wide. Allow additional fabric if you wish to lengthen the skirt or match a patterned design.
