The Rectangle Top by Sewing Therapy is a wonderfully versatile sewing pattern that transforms simple geometric shapes into a stylish, contemporary top. Built around easy-to-sew rectangles, this clever design offers plenty of creative possibilities, with interchangeable necklines, sleeves and waist finishes to mix and match.
Choose a clean straight neckline for a minimalist look or a square neckline with a choice of depths. The waist can be finished with pretty shirring for a softly gathered peplum, elastic for a gently cinched silhouette, or a simple straight hem for a relaxed, boxy shape. Sleeve options include sleeveless, elbow-length and long sleeves with elasticated cuffs.
Three suggested views provide a starting point, but the interchangeable details make it easy to create your own combination. Fabric choice makes a real difference too – choose something crisp for a more sculptural silhouette or a softer, drapier fabric for a relaxed finish.
A lovely project for beginners, with plenty of scope for more experienced dressmakers to experiment.

Suggested Fabrics
Suitable for a variety of woven dressmaking fabrics, depending on the finish you prefer. Cotton lawn, poplin and lightweight linen will give the top a little structure, while viscose, Tencel and soft cotton blends will create a more fluid silhouette.
Pre-wash your fabric before cutting to allow for any shrinkage.

The Rectangle Top is a relaxed, pull-on style with generous ease through the bust and waist. Choose your size using your bust measurement rather than your usual ready-to-wear size. The loose silhouette is designed to skim the body, so it should not feel tight at the waist or hips.
The pattern is drafted for a height of 163cm. The neckline depth and body length can be adjusted using the instructions and accompanying video tutorials.
