The Joa from Merchant & Mills is a wonderfully versatile wrap top that's as lovely to sew as it is to wear. With its simple shape, side ties and neat lining, it's an easy layering piece that works beautifully on its own or worn as a gilet over a favourite shirt or dress when the weather turns cooler.
Choose to make Joa in a quilted or non-quilted fabric, depending on the look you're after. Soft quilted cottons create a cosy, textured layer, while denim or layered cotton jacquard gives it a more structured, contemporary feel. The pattern even includes instructions for quilting your own fabric, making it a brilliant introduction to this traditional technique.
Quick and satisfying to sew, Joa is a lovely project for confident beginners and experienced dressmakers alike. It's also a great opportunity to experiment with colour and texture, particularly if you fancy making your own quilted fabric.
Sizes: XS–3XL
Fabric Suggestions:
- Pre-quilted: Quilted cotton, quilted cotton jacquard or pre-quilted Indian cotton.
- For quilting your own fabric: Lightweight linen, cotton, cotton blends or lightweight denim up to 5oz. We recommend 100% cotton wadding.
- Non-quilted: Medium-weight cottons and denim.
Fabric Requirements:
The quantities below are for non-quilted fabric, pre-quilted fabric or each individual layer when quilting your own fabric. If making your own quilted fabric, allow the stated quantity for the outer fabric, backing fabric and wadding separately.

- Fabric requirements apply to fabrics with or without nap.
- If matching quilting lines, allow approximately 10% extra fabric.
- If using Merchant & Mills pre-quilted Indian cotton, which has a usable width of 98cm, use the M–L cutting layout and quantity for sizes XS–S. For sizes M–3XL, add 20cm to the fabric requirements and follow the suggested cutting layout.

If you change your mind about an item or have received the incorrect item then we offer a very straightforward return policy. You may return unwanted goods up to 28 days after purchase for exchange, a store credit, or a refund.
Returned merchandise must be in the condition sold with original packaging and any tags intact. Goods must be unused, unopened, in perfect condition and remain in a re-saleable condition. Non-returnable items include kits once they have been cut, cut lengths of fabric, ribbons or trim, samples, sale items, and ex-demonstration items.
