Inspired by The Great British Sewing Bee, our Clothkits Sewing Bee Challenges are designed to build your dressmaking knowledge, confidence and know-how – without the pressure of a competition!
Let your imagination run free – this is playtime at Clothkits!
For many sewists, being creative can actually be one of the biggest challenges. If you're happiest working within set guidelines and following a pattern step by step, suddenly being told to forget the instructions and make it up as you go along can feel surprisingly unnerving.
The Alteration/Transformation Challenge is your chance to throw out the rule book. For three hours, you have full permission to rip, cut, tear, stitch, stick and sew, mixing things up and going completely off-piste. You may discover some hidden creativity along the way – and leave with the confidence to experiment with future makes and create clothes that feel much more uniquely you.
What you’ll do
In true Great British Sewing Bee tradition, you'll have a pile of unwanted shirts and blouses, trims and notions to alter and transform into something completely different.
Unlike the Sewing Bee, that 'something' can be absolutely anything. Another item of clothing, a bag, a cushion, a textile picture, the dog's summer outfit... anything goes! It doesn't have to fit and it doesn't even have to be functional.
This challenge is all about tapping into your creativity – yes, you do have some! – and giving yourself a break from the order and precision of everyday sewing, where accuracy and neatness are usually so important.
What you’ll learn
- How to look at existing garments with fresh eyes and imagine new possibilities
- How to experiment with shape, fabric, trims and details
- How to develop ideas without relying on a pattern or instructions
- How to become more confident making your own creative decisions
- How to embrace experimentation and enjoy the process without worrying about perfection
There will be sewing involved, but technique, accuracy and finish are secondary to your creation. This is your opportunity to experiment, make mistakes, change direction and simply see what happens.
Is this class for you? Absolutely! All sewing abilities and all levels of creativity are welcome. Whether you're bursting with ideas or firmly believe you haven't got a creative bone in your body, come along and have a go – you might surprise yourself.
What to bring: A selection of used or unwanted shirts and blouses – men's, women's or children's, in any fabric or style – that you're happy to cut up. Please also bring any buttons, trims, braid, zips or other notions you're willing to add to the creative pile.
About your Teacher: Jo gained her experience in the fashion industry as a designer/pattern cutter in ladies' outerwear. She has taught adults sewing and pattern cutting skills for over a decade, from absolute beginners sewing to bra making, simple pattern alterations to fitting masterclasses. Jo is an inspiring teacher and encourages creativity and confidence in dressmaking and sewing projects.

They may be challenges, but they're definitely not a competition – there are no prizes and everyone's a winner!
Venue: The workshop is held in our modern and vibrant studio at the Clothkits shop. We are located in central Chichester, about a 10 minute walk from the train and bus station. The closest car park is The Cattle Market.

Returns
If you change your mind about an item or have received the incorrect item then we offer a very straightforward return policy. You may return unwanted goods up to 28 days after purchase for exchange, a store credit, or a refund.
Returned merchandise must be in the condition sold with original packaging and any tags intact. Goods must be unused, unopened, in perfect condition and remain in a re-saleable condition. Non-returnable items include kits once they have been cut, cut lengths of fabric, ribbons or trim, samples, sale items, and ex-demonstration items.
