Empire Lampshade Day Workshop | Chichester Craft Courses
During the day you will learn how to make a 'soft' shade using fabric of your choice on a bowed empire frame, a classic traditional style lampshade.
You will learn how to bind your frame with straight frame tape, then stretch, attach and hand sew your fabric into place. Finally you will add trims and binding to add a lovely finish to your shade
This all day course will also include a demonstrated instruction on how to add soft 'balloon linings' and different types of trims and embellishments to your lampshade. You will leave the course with your lampshade and tuition handouts so you can go on to make many other shades of your choice. Some degree of finishing at home may be required depending on your stitching speed.
About your Teacher:
Jane Warren is one talented lady, and an excellent tutor. She has many years of making lampshades under her belt. When she is not teaching, she is making lampshades for clients or her webshop at The Lampshade Loft.
Maximum class size of 6.
Ideal for complete beginners, or for those wanting to try something new. Please do consider that this workshop is mainly hand sewing, so it is helpful if you enjoy this!
For your workshop you will need approx half a metre of full width fabric, or larger, depending on the print or design you have chosen. In addition you will need 1 metre of trim for the base - pom pom, tassel, braid or anything stretchy! All available to purchase in store if you wish.
Please note when choosing your fabric that it will need to be cut on the bias for this shade (i.e. if your fabric has a pattern, it will be placed at a 45 degree angle).
Your chosen fabric should be relatively robust - not too thin as it will need to be heavily stretched and also to prevent the light bulb showing through the shade. Try and aim for a cotton/cotton mix, nothing with a loose weave or embellishments.
EXTRAS: you will need a £10-12 budget for the frame (paid directly to the tutor on the day).
The workshop is held in a bright and airy venue four minute's walk from our Clothkits shop. We will rendezvous on day one at Clothkits to collect any supplies needed and then take the short walk to the venue. Clothkits shop is located in central Chichester, about a 10 minute walk from the train and bus station. The closest car park is The Cattle Market.
